A Switching Lemma for Small Restrictions and Lower Bounds for k - DNF Resolution

چکیده
We prove a new switching lemma that works for restrictions that set only a small fraction of the variables and is applicable to DNFs with small terms. We use this to prove lower bounds for the Res(k) propositional proof system, an extension of resolution which works with kDNFs instead of clauses. We also obtain an exponential separation between depth d circuits of bottom fan-in k and depth d circuits of bottom fan-in k + 1. Our results for Res(k) are: 1. The 2n to n weak pigeonhole principle requires exponential size to refute in Res(k), for k ≤ √ log n/ log log n. 2. For each constant k, there exists a constant w > k so that random w-CNFs require exponential size to refute in Res(k). 3. For each constant k, there are sets of clauses which have polynomial size Res(k + 1) refutations, but which require exponential size Res(k) refutations.

An Entropy Proof of the Switching Lemma and Tight Bounds on the Decision-Tree Size of AC
The first result of this paper is (a novel proof of) the following switching lemma for m-clause DNF formulas F : (1) P[ DTdepth(F Rp) ≥ t ] = O(p log(m+ 1)) for all p ∈ [0, 1] and t ∈ N where Rp is the p-random restriction and DTdepth denotes decision-tree depth. Our proof replaces the counting arguments in previous proofs of H̊astad’s O(pw) switching lemma for width-w DNFs [5, 8, 2] with a nove...
متن کاملA Space Hierarchy for k-DNF Resolution
The k-DNF resolution proof systems are a family of systems indexed by the integer k, where the k member is restricted to operating with formulas in disjunctive normal form with all terms of bounded arity k (k-DNF formulas). This family was introduced in [Krajı́ček 2001] as an extension of the wellstudied resolution proof system. A number of lower bounds have been proven on k-DNF resolution proof...
متن کامل18.405J S16 Lecture 6: AC0 Lower Bounds and Switching Lemma
The key ingredient is the so-called Switching Lemma. To state it we need a notion of p-restrictions. Say we have a function f : {0, 1}n → {0, 1}. Then we say that a function f ′ is a p-restriction of f , if it is obtained from f via the following process. Each variable is set to zero with probability (1− p)/2, and is set to one with the same probability (so, with probability p a variable is not...
متن کاملSymmetric Approximation Arguments for Monotone Lower Bounds without Sun owers
We propose a symmetric version of Razborov's method of approximation to prove lower bounds for monotone circuit complexity. Traditionally, only DNF formulas have been used as approximators, whereas we use both CNF and DNF formulas. As a consequence we no longer need the Sun-ower lemma that has been essential for the method of approximation. The new approximation argument corresponds to Haken's ...
متن کاملAn entropy-based switching lemma for m-clause DNFs
We show that every m-clause DNF F satisfies P[ DTdepth(F Rp) ≥ t ] = O(p log(m+ 1)) where Rp is the p-random restriction and DTdepth(·) is decision-tree depth. Similar to H̊astad’s O(pw) switching lemma for width-w DNFs, we analyze the canonical decision tree of F Rp. However, in contrast to previous switching lemma proofs (H̊astad [4], Razborov [5], Beame [2]), our bound is based on an entropy a...
